Specially dedicated to children, the MESTIZOS ensemble offers interactive workshops at schools, ideal for primary school students.
On a playful way, MESTIZOS artists make discover Colombia to schoolchildren through its popular and folk arts, incorporating several modes of artistic expression: Dance, Music, Crafts.
Planning
Introduction to Colombia (approx. 10 min) :
Small conference as a Questions / Answers forum with students, which introduces the context. Brief presentation of the country, its geography, its people, its history...
Craft exhibition (approx. 10 min) :
Art and everyday life objets exhibition from typical crafts (made of bamboo, palm leaves, ... etc). Maps, Colombian landscapes photos and posters.
Traditional percussion workshop (approx. 30 min) :
Introduction of some percussion intruments used in Colombia (tambora, guasá, congas, cowbells, charrasca, .... etc) and children workshop practice by playing a basic polyrhythm: the Cumbia rhythm.
Traditional dance workshop (approx. 30 min) :
Children are introduced to the basic steps of the Cumbia, a folk dance born in the colonial era, cultural heritage of miscegenation between black slaves and native Americans. This dance is also a musical genre still very practiced in Colombia and throughout Latin America.
Ending (approx. 10 min) :
Mini Performance by 2 artists, illustrating the activities carried out during the sessions: Colombian trad songs recital, Cumbia dance Demonstration on recorded music.
